Welcome to the first edition of Cape Town’s legendary luxury hotel’s new-look newsletter.

The first quarter of 2009 has seen exciting changes and developments taking place at Mount Nelson Hotel and there are still more to come…

Room to grow
Towards the end of last year we announced the opening of our colourful new Nellie and Nelson children’s activity centre. It’s become the place to see and be seen at for our littler guests – and our teen guests are also thrilled to have a chill-out room of their own.

Mount Nelson Hotel is Cape Town’s leading resort family travel destination - visit our website for information on family friendly travel and accommodation packages.

Flavour of the month
The hotel kitchen is abuzz with excitement at the arrival of our new Executive Chef Rudi Liebenberg. Rudi trained at Wits University (and in his mother’s kitchen) and cut his teeth in the industry at some of SA’s top hotels. He recently relocated from Gauteng with his wife, two boys and a culinary Olympic medal, and is already injecting fresh inspiration into the hotel’s culinary outlets.

Spa bliss

Librisa Spa is a luxurious bolthole in the heart of the city centre, perfect for anyone looking to banish winter blues without blowing the budget. Visit our website to see our selection of winter spa saver treatments and monthly special offers.

On location
See if you can spot scenes shot in and around the hotel in the upcoming Clint Eastwood-directed feature film (currently filming under codename ‘The Human Factor’) which chronicles the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and features Hollywood heavyweights Morgan Freeman (as Nelson Mandela) and Matt Damon (as Springbok captain Francois Pienaar).

Celebrating
Mount Nelson Hotel celebrates its 110th birthday this year and Managing Director Nick Seewer celebrated his 20th anniversary as Managing Director of Mount Nelson Hotel and Orient-Express Hotels Africa last month.

Giving back
Last year a team of hotel staff built a Habitat for Humanity house in the impoverished Mfuleni community with funds raised through the Hotels Housing Trust initiative. Hotel guests are encouraged to donate money to the initiative through hotel room collateral, and over the past ten years the hotel has contributed over ZAR 1 million to the charity.

In 1999 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama addressed over 500 Capetonians in the Mount Nelson Hotel ballroom where he enlightened his guests (who sat cross-legged on the ballroom floor) with a teaching on ‘The Four Noble Truths’. It is said that at mealtimes he would only request his two all-time favourite treats – crispy fried chicken and ice-cream.
